Every time I attend the Emerald City Comicon I learn something knew about myself as a photographer. The first year I went my objective wasn’t too take photographs but I still took some. It was fun. I was using a Canon Rebel XSi at the time and I was still learning photography.
The second year I took a few pictures but I realized that I wasn’t really interested in what I took. I tried to get people to pose and get shots of different characters but none of them really made me interested.
This time around my third time, I hardly took any photographs. This time I was so enthralled by the business and the amazing amount of artists, merchandise and creatives I forgot that I was even holding a camera from time to time. I also wanted to take photographs that I felt were interesting. I wanted to capture these “characters” in what was ordinary like poses. Sure, I got the few “hey, can I take your picture?” Especially of a great Deadpool costume. As much as I love looking at peoples cosplay it is harder for me to photograph them.
What I have decided though is that next year I will spend one day to see everything and then go another day to photograph and maybe I will get what interests me. Or better yet, maybe I will do it for a project or work for Emerald City Comicon. THAT would be cool.
Here are a few of my favorite shots I took:
The one and only, Wil Wheaton!
Obi-Wan looking at comic books.
Michael Alexandropoulos and comic book artist Robert Atkins. Really awesome guys.
